Jamie Benson is an undergraduate lab assistant in the Schmale Lab helping with research projects on ice nucleation and microbial diversity. Jamie is currently pursuing a B.S. in Biological Science at Virginia Tech. When not in the lab he enjoys hiking, finding new music, and watching a funny movie. | ||||||||
Hamilton Crockett is an undergraduate
laboratory assistant in the Schmale Lab helping with
mycotoxin testing services. She is currently pursuing a
B.S. in Agronomy at Virginia Tech. In her free time,
Hamilton enjoys running, trying new food, and learning
languages. |

Team EARL is an undergraduate
Mechanical Engineering Senior Design Team working to
outfit an underwater Remote Operated Vehicle to become an
Emergency Aquatic Recovery Locator. EARL is one component
of a three part system being developed to aid first
responders in dive rescue scenarios. |

Hope Gruszewski is a lab technician/ research specialist in
the Schmale & Westwood labs. Originally from
Memphis, TN, Hope received her B.S. in Horticulture
Science from VT and an M.S. in Horticulture Science from
Colorado State University. When not at the bench,
she is an avid gardener and loves hiking in the Blue
Ridge Mountains.

Regina Hanlon is a research associate
studying ice-nucleating microbes in the atmosphere and
tracking the movement of hazardous agents in the water.
Regina received her M.S. in PPWS from VT and has
experience in Plant Sciences. Outside of the lab, Regina
enjoys traveling, camping, swimming, and cooking with her
family. |

Celia Jimenez-Sanchez is a postdoctoral research associate in the Schmale lab working on projects related to the detoxification of mycotoxins and the identification of microorganisms in the atmosphere. She earned her Ph.D at the University of Seville in Spain. In her free time, she loves traveling and watching good movies at home. | ||||||||
Niki McMaster is a
research associate in the Schmale lab, responsible for
operating the GC/MS. She manages mycotoxin testing
services in cooperation with the USWBSI. She
earned her B.S. in Biochemistry at Virginia Tech and
spent 10 years working mainly for private biotechnology
companies in Blacksburg's CRC. Away from the
bench, Niki enjoys spending quality time with her
husband and two daughters.

Erica Pack is a Ph.D student in the
Schmale Lab, studying the transport of mycotoxins from
corn crops to pig tissues. She earned her B.S. in Forensic
Science at Penn State in 2016. When not at the lab, she
enjoys knitting, cooking, and spending time with her
friends. |
||||||||
Craig Powers is postdoctoral research
associate in the Schmale lab. He earned his Ph.D. from
Virginia Tech, and his Bachelors degree in Mathematics at
the University of South Carolina in 2011. His interests
range from electrical/mechanical to dynamical systems.
When away from the lab Craig enjoys hiking/camping and
playing blues guitar. |
